My family had a blast at San Diego Comic-Con 2024! I cosplayed Kevin Flynn in my replica prop costume, and my wife Dawn - in her first 'Con ever - cosplayed Strong Sad from Homestar Runner!
TRONifying a Video
In retrospect, now that D23 revealed a first look at TRON: Ares, wherein the programs escape into the real world and Flynn apparently lives, I'm pleased that my video below is more relevant than I knew!
For the TRON effect, I used GIMP along with some Python I wrote to do the frame coloring. The tricky part had always been rotoscoping me out of the scene for coloring my suit up; about 161 frames in this video. Rather than cut them by hand, I instead...
- Used the "Roto Brush" tool in a trial of Adobe After Effects to isolate "me" from the background and exported the video as PNG frames with transparency (alpha channel).
- Ran my GIMP/Python stuff on the PNGs to create the colors and glow as I'm running.
- Used ffmpeg to stitch the frames into a .MOV video with transparency.
- Used Final Cut Pro X to overlay that .MOV on top of the original footage, aligned the frames, and exported to MP4.
Homestar Runner's Strong Sad
In her first Comic-Con ever, my wife Dawn cosplayed Strong Sad from Homestar Runner! She even made a bottle of Smarty Juice and ran into Homestar!
